NTSB Board Members "Tie One On" to Highlight Sober Driving During The Holiday

December 15, 2005 - Washington, DC -- In an effort to highlight the importance of safe, sober driving this holiday season National Transportation Board Members participated today in Mother's Against Drunk Driving's "Tie One On For Safety" event held in Washington, D.C.'s L'Enfant Plaza.

Every year over 90 percent of transportation fatalities occur on the nation's highways and alcohol is involved in almost 40% of those fatalities. NTSB Acting Chairman Mark Rosenker stated, "So many accidents that we investigate involve a complex solution but this is one issue where the answer is simple -- don't drink and drive."

Acting Chairman Rosenker and Member Debbie Hersman joined Glynn Birch, National President of MADD in tying ribbons on their vehicles as a reminder that alcohol related crashes are both devastating and avoidable.

"Today all the Members of the National Transportation Safety Board are tying ribbons on our personal cars to commemorate those who have been lost in drunk driving accidents and to rededicate ourselves to solving this most preventable of tragedies," said Rosenker.

For more than thirty years the Board has made recommendations aimed at deterring drunk driving, and eliminating hard core drinking and driving is currently on the Board's Most Wanted safety improvements list.
